Getting to Know Your Voice

Caroline J. Sumlin - March 2024

These charts should help you see your voice the way that I hear it and possibly the way that others hear it, too!

The pie chart (left) shows some of the qualities of your voice.

The bar chart shows your highlights (level 3), which are areas you should be proud of as you’re efficient and consistent in your delivery. You are doing a really good job here, and you should continue to highlight these elements in your voice. Growth areas (level 1) are parts of your voice where you should actively work to improve (see below).

Focus areas (level 2) are somewhat in the middle. You’re not 100% there, but your voice is improving! It’s good to “focus” on these things as they’re becoming a part of your skillset and vocal style.

What’s Next?

    • Stand up and stretch - especially your upper body

    • Massage your neck

    • Warm up your voice with exercises and scales (see below)

    • Pause if you feel strain

    • In general, drink more water than any other beverage - room temp over cold, if you can

Be sure to consult your doctor if you start to feel any tension or stress in your voice or body when singing.

  • Warming up your voice is a crucial part of your vocal journey! These will feel simple. Which will allow you to focus on your pitch and diaphragm in addition to the warm up. Take a deep breath, and say”ah” by clicking below:
