Knowing Your Voice

Our voices are uniquely defined by different qualities. These are the four strongest qualities that I hear in your voice and the voice of your fellow artists! I hope this helps you to see how I hear you, and how others may hear you, too.

Every quality listed is positive. Embrace what makes your voice unique!

Challenge Songs

Every season (yes - Spring! Summer! Fall! Winter!), you should pick 1 or 2 challenge songs. I like to define these as songs that challenge you. They should not hurt! Ha. These songs shouldn’t feel like you’re in physical pain or make you want to throw your phone across the room (most of the time).

Vocal Tips & More

  • Before singing, remember to…

    • Focus on good posture

    • Make sure your neck is physically comfortable

    • Stretch - especially your upper body

    • Warm up your voice with exercises and scales

    • Pause if you feel strain

    • Drink more water than any other beverage - room temp over cold, if you can

  • So… how do you know if you’re getting better?

    1. Record yourself singing at least 30 seconds of a “challenge song”

    2. Don’t listen to the recording!

    3. Practice the song daily

    4. In one week, or month, rerecord the same part of the same song

    5. Don’t listen to it!

    6. Listen to the first recording instead

    7. Repeat this over the course of 4 weeks or 4 months. You will be able to hear your progress and growth!

  • What do you need to work on? Where do you need to grow?

Start a group email chain or text thread with other artists. Share your areas of growth so that you can check in with eachother and maybe exchange recordings (see above).

This is not to teach eachother, or tell anyone else what to do. It’s instead a way to encourage fellow creative where they are strong and help build eahother up where you need to grow.

  • Warming up your voice is a crucial part of your vocal journey! These will feel simple. Which will allow you to focus on your pitch and diaphragm in addition to the warm up. Take a deep breath, and say”ah” by clicking below:
